Comminution is needed for the liberation of low-grade ores so that the iron content can be upgraded by gangue removal. This necessitates grinding to such a size that the iron minerals and gangue are present as separate grains.
For example, suppose we have an iron ore of 0.5 meters, and the liberation size is about 400 microns. We need to reduce its capacity to 80% less than 440 microns, at least. If we try to conduct the comminution in one single stage using a mill, we will have several problems. First, the capacity will be deficient.
01.01.2015· Future trends in iron ore comminution and classification. The in situ grade of magnetite ores is much lower (~ 20–50% Fe) compared with hematite/goethite ores. Therefore, magnetite ores will always require crushing and grinding followed by magnetic separation and, in some cases, reverse flotation to produce high-grade concentrates suitable for pelletizing.
Focusing on iron ore samples the study showed how the particle breakage rate decreases when the particles reach the grain size of the main mineral component. Below that size, comminution does not increase mineral liberation and therefore in most of the cases passing over that boundary is only a waste of energy.

Comminution is the reduction of solid materials from one average particle size to a smaller average particle size, by crushing, grinding, cutting, vibrating, or other processes. In geology, it occurs naturally during faulting in the upper part of the Earth's crust. In industry, it is an important unit operation in mineral processing, ceramics, electronics, and other fields, accomplished with
Research of iron ore grinding in a vertical-roller-mill. Abstract The total energy consumption for ore comminution will further increase within the next decades. One contribution to minimise the increase is to use more efficient comminution equipment. Vertical-roller-mills (VRM) are an energy-efficient alternative to conventional grinding technology. One reason is the dry in-bed grinding

The comminution of ores consumes a high portion of energy. Therefore, different pretreatment methods of ores prior to their comminution are considered to reduce this energy. However, the results of pretreatment methods and their technological development are scattered in literature. Hence, this paper aims at collating the different ore pretreatment methods with their applications and results

Comminution may be carried out on either dry materials or slurries. The first pair of electromagnets was weakly magnetised and served to draw off any iron ore present. The second pair were strongly magnetised and attracted the wolframite, which is weakly magnetic. These machines were capable of treating 10 tons of ore a day. This process of separating magnetic substances from the non
Until recently, preparation of iron ores in Brazil did not use comminution intensively, given that plants mainly produced sinter feed, natural pellet fines, besides lump ore. However, with

Some minerals require a lot of applied power and residence time before showing heating or comminution-type effects. Example: Goethite hydrated iron ore. The iron mineralogy heats, but the bulk ore must heat to a point to where the -OH (water) is released. Line 73 Make sure you are clear that it is granites being described, as per the reference.

Comminution: Comminution utilises energy to reduce the size of ore particles in order to liberate embedded mineral grains so that they can be recovered in the subsequent process stages. The research under this theme focusses on understanding how energy is used in devices that use different breakage mechanisms to achieve size reduction and how energy is utilised in different comminution circuit
